Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 6.5hp Key Start Highwheel Weedtrimmer Model # 536.773520, craftsman model, fly wheel

Question
Craftsman 6.5hp key start highwheel weedtrimmer Model# 536.773520
The engine on this highwheel trimmer is Craftsman model# 143.996512.
The key start will not work.  the armature has a gear on top that when the key is activated is supposed to rotate downward to engage in the flywheel to start the motor.  The top gear goes down only to the top of the flywheel gear and not low enough to engage in the fly wheel gear.  If I turn the top gear down part way and then turn the key it will engage and start.  What is my problem? What parts do I need.  The battery is fully charged.  Could it be that I need a new armature?
We bought this trimmer in 2000.
Thank you for helping me.

Answer
Hey Gilbert,
It sounds like a new armature would be a good buy. But try and look for any blockages that way be holding back the gear from engaging to the flywheel. If all looks ok try and replace. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more information.
