Nissan Repair: 1998 Nissan Frontier 4x4 instrument cluster, nissan frontier, trip odo

Question
1998 Nissan Frontier 4x4 Instrument Cluster malfunction.

I have read your previous posts concerning an  instrument cluster malfunction. The fuel and temp guage reamains pegged at full, while the speedo and tach bounce at 25-30mph and 1500 rpm respectively. The odo reads 99999 constantly while trip odo shows a possible accurate reading.

I have tried unplugging, cleaning and replugging the instrument cluster plugs inside the dash. The guages still read same.

I have checked the fuses but all are intact. Is there a relay or fusable link involved? If so, where are these located? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Brettamo,

I would bet the resistor is defective on the cluster.   Take the cluster out and look on the back of it and you will find a small metal box that is the resistor that cuts the voltage done to 9 volts.  Replace it or get a new cluster from a wrecking yard.
