Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Seized Tecumseh 10 hp engine, craftsman riding lawnmower, hp engine

Question
Mark,

I recently aquired Craftsman riding lawnmower, the previous owner had past away, and the family wanted to get rid of it.  The mower was idle for over a year, and the family had it running when I picked it up.

As fall is starting here, I decided I would run the old gas out of the mower, and proceeded to mow my lawn. After about 10 minutes the mower stalled.  I tried to start it, but the started just clicked.  I removed the dust cover, saw the start was OK.  I tried to turn the flywheel, and it did not move.  I checked the oil, and it was just at the bottom of the dip stick.

Being 10 years old, what would you suggest?

Answer
Dan,
Im sorry to tell you this but it sounds like the mower now also has passed away. Unless you want to get it started again. What occured was lack of lubrication. Therefore causing seizure to the piston. Basicaly the piston is stuck to the cylinder walls. The only way to repair this is to take appart the engine and find a way to take out the piston. Next order a new piston from a small engine dealer. Re-install the piston and away you go. Im making it sound easy. If your in Canada which is where i live than that would be a great winter project. Thats what I do in the winter. Now if you fix it then remember to fill crakcase with 10W-30 Oil. Hope this helps. Let me know when you are fixing the engine so I may provide you with additional help.
