Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine running only with choke full, fuel flow, strokes

Question
Whats wrong with a engine that will only start and run with the choke fully on and cracked just a little bit? As soon as you open up the choke the engine dies. This has happened to me on four strokes and two strokes. Thanks, Larry Ellis.

Answer
Hi Larry,

This indicates a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  The carb most always has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.
