Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Coleman Generator, coleman powermate, coleman generators

Question
I have a Coleman Powermate 5000 generator that is equipped with a B&S 9hp Vangard engine, model # 185437. There seems to be some problem in the crank case and loud sounds can be heard when trying to start it.

I have removed most of the outside of the power plant, now I just need to get the center or the armature off the engine shaft, how do I do this ?  I have removed the long bolt that runs through the armature, but there is no way there seems to use a puller as there is alot of plastic thru out the armature and the fan at the engine is also plastic. If I can remove this, I'm home free.... hope you can help.

Answer
Although I am not intimately familiar with Coleman generators, as a general rule of thumb, the generator shaft is usually not bolted directly to the engine crankshaft.  There is usually some type of coupler (rubber, nylon, etc.) connecting the two shafts.  I would recommend that before you proceed any further, try to locate a service manual to show how the two are coupled.  Hope this helps.
