Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 3.75hp flooding, float bowl, seat assembly

I have a 3.75hp craftsman push mower purchased last summer. Today when I went out to start it it ran for a little bit and then flooded and died. When I took off the air filter I noticed that it had gas on it, I quickly realized that the gas was coming from a red hose that looks like it comes from the region of the primer. The gas came out in a steady stream until I drained the gas tank. When I filled the tank again the gas didn't start streaming from the hose until I started it up again. Do you have any thoughts?
Thanks
Josh

Hi Josh,

Does the red hose go into the air filter box?
I would suspect the carb float and needle/seat assembly.  It may be stuck open or have debris preventing the valve from closing.  You will need to remove the float bowl and take a look.  It might be easier to first remove the carb.

Let me know what you find.
Michael

Michael,
I took it all apart again and looked it over, it all looked clean so I
focused my attention on the little piece of metal on the floater that keeps it together with the needle. I basically just bent it upward a little bit so that it would cause the needle to close before float bowl would get so full. It worked and I didn't have any problems after that!!!
Thanks for the help
Josh

Answer
Excellent Josh!  Glad to hear that you are up and running again.  Usually the float doesn't go out of adjustment but your resetting it seems to have put sufficiant pressure on the valve and stopped the leak.  Now you know where to look if you encounter related trouble.  Best, Michael
