Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): white smoke from Lawn Mower, plume of smoke, white smoke

Question
Mike,

I have a Scott's 6.5 HP lawn mower. I'm getting a little plume of smoke when I first start it and then when I shut if off, there's some white smoke from the exhaust, Like a cigarette just burning itself.

I was wondering what would be causing it.

Thanks,

Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

The smoke is from oil.  I'm not sure what would be causing it.  If the engine is old the rings may be allowing oil to bypass from the crankcase and burn.  The smoke may only then be noticable when the engine is not running at full speed.

Good Luck,
Michael
