Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD Lawn Tractor Carb problem, crankcase breather, leakdown test

Question
I have a 1988 JD Hydro 175 with a Kawasaki FC420-003161 Engine. Bought not running. Have got to start but engine getting way too much fuel. Runs exactly like it would if choke was on, white/grey smoke no power. Carb is clean but I believe previous owner tinkered with it. Are there any adjustments for the jetting or should I just buy a new carb.

Answer
WHite/gray smoke is an indication of either oil or gas in the oil.  Black smoke would indicate an overrich condition.

If there is a lot of white smoke, I would say the crankcase breather is in need of replacement.  This would be indicated by oil puddling in the intake.  I'd also check the oil for gas.  I wouldn't replace the carburetor at this point.  Let me know if there's any oil in the intake.  Personally, I'd do a leakdown test if there's not so as to establish the ability of the engine to seal.  Thanks, PK.
