Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowblower, toro 521, discharge chute

Question
My husband bought a Toro 521 Snowblower a few years ago for $1000 (used).  We would like to sell it, can you recommend a price?  Also, it hasn't been tuned up in years. Is that something he an do or should we take it somewhere-he can do basic repairs.

Answer
I have been out of the industry for a few years so I can't recommend a price based on typical used prices other than looking through the classifieds and seeing what they are going for.  Seems to me that a loose number is $100/hp (so $500 for yours, which is 5hp and 21" cut).  If fuel has been left in it while it has been sitting, the carb will need to be cleaned thoroughly.  A full snowblower tune-up would entail changing the oil and spark plug.  Lubricating all available grease fittings and pivot points.  It is also wise to sand the discharge chute, clean it thoroughly and give it a fresh coat of paint to keep snow from sticking to it.  Hope this helps.
