Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower not starting, fuel tank cap, filter screen

Question
Hello - I have a question about my Murray (Scotts) lawnmower.  Model number 229630x8a. It is about 4 years old.  It will not start, and when I prime it, it almost seems as if it isn't really priming. I am wondering if this mower has a fuel filter and if so, where is it located.  I have gotten it to start just for a second or two but then it will slowing die.  So, I don't think that it is the spark plug eventhough it is as old as the mower.  Maybe I should change that.  So, what do you think.  Hopefully this is enough info.

Thanks.  Cool site.

Answer
It will have some type of fuel filter screen in the tank or the carb.  You will need to remove the air cleaner cover and look into the carb throat when you prime.  You should see a squirt of fuel if the primer is working correctly.  If not, try loosening the fuel tank cap and see if it will now prime.  If the tank vent (in fuel cap) is plugged it would prime with the cap loosened.  If this is not the problem, you will need to thoroughly clean the carb and fuel tank.  If you think the plug is old, change it.  Hope this helps.
