Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower Starting, mower deck, flywheel

Question
When I attempt to pull start my five year old Craftsman 5.0HP mower (it usually takes three or four pulls) the engine makes a grinding noise as the cord retracts and the flywheel stops spinning.  I noticed the same grinding noise as the engine came to a halt the last time I mowed.  I've checked the fluids (oil) and the level is fine.  Any thoughts?

Answer
Without hearing the noise I can only suggest a few sources for the noise.  It could be the starter pawls not retracting so they drag on the starter cup.  Another issue could be that the mower deck is bent and the blade is contacting it.  It could also be the blade brake dragging on the flywheel, which would likely only require adjustment to correct.  Hope this helps.
