Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small Engine Repair, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
I have a 8hp Briggs & Stratton engine. I put on a carburater repair kit and i am having a hard time keeping it running. To start it i have to close the choke then as soon as it opens it dies.Do you think i just need to adjust the idle or what do you think?

Answer
Hi Dave,

If it runs only with the choke on, that indicates a lack of fuel flow.  You can turn out the mixture screws and see if that helps.  If not, you will need to disassemble and re-clean the carb.  Check each and every small hole, probing with a small wire.  Finally, blow it out with compressed air.
The larger high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1&1/2 turns out, while the small low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out.  Set the idle stop screw to give a low but adequate idle.

Let me know how you make out.
