Audio Systems: Sound system, master volume control, rockford amp

Question
Hey, I have a question regarding my sound system. I have a '96 Ex Accord and have 12" subwoofers (Punch) and a Rockford amp hooked into the car. I noticed clean cut sound when they were in my '99 Explorer and now they don't sound as good. Another thing, too, is it seems as though it has weak base. I have a brand new Alpine CD1956, but unless the subwoofer is up to +15 (all the way) and the base setting is at +5, anything below that is like I don't even have a sound system. I am so confused.. Even with the backseat down, it still sounds faint. Do you think you could help me figure out what may be going on? Thank you so much and hope to hear back from you.

Answer
Systems do not sound the same when moved from one auto to another, for sure.  But, in your case the difference is too great to blame on to just a difference in cabin volume/space.

The subwoofer should put out nearly the same sound pressure level as before - even if the lowest frequencies are not as good (the Explorer, being a larger interior space may be able to produce a lower bass frequency).

In any event, I think the first thing to do is check out the wiring and connections from head unit to the amp.  Also, you must check the phase of the speakers.  If the subwoofer, for example, is out of phase with the other speakers it will cancel the bass response.

And, there may be a master volume control on the sub amp that got adjusted during the transfer over to the Honda.

So, there are many things for you to check out.  Take them one at at time and make sure each connection is the same as it was in the Exlporer.  Go through each channel using the balance and fader to make sure each channel is working as it should.

These trial and error experimenting will lead you to the solution, I am sure.  But, let me know if you get stuck.
