Eric ..please advise..got into some real heaving mowing..believe its gone out of timing as unable to start..just backfire..is there a sheer key or something within the fly-wheel...is a puller essential to remove it.
Thanks Fred.
Answer -
Yes, a puller is required to remove the flywheel.  Does your engine have a 3/4 by 3/4 inch square piece that fits into the starter pulley?

Let me know.
Eric

YES, have removed square piece, recovered the ball bearing that went AWOL in the process..down to bare shaft..Cheers Fred.

Answer
You should have a total of 6 ball bearings.

Anyhow, you need to remove the clutch, the part where the balls go into.  It is normal thread, righty tighty, lefty loosy.  Briggs sell a tool to remove the clutch.  I've heard of guys using a hammer and chisel, but the tool is much faster and safer.  Once the clutch is off, remove the washer and you will see the key and key way.  The key is retangular shaped and if the shaft keyway and flywheel keyway are not in line, then the key is sheared.  DO NOT hit the top of the crankshaft with a hammer!!!!  You will regret this later when you have to sand, file and grind on the shaft to get the start to work again.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
