Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): setting timing gears on lawnmower, craftsman 917, timing gears

Question
I had an oil leak in my craftsman lawnmower and replaced the case gasket. I did not set  the timing gears properly and have not been able to get the machine to run since. I have reset the gears but obviously not correctly. The crankshaft has keyways inline for the drive pulley and the blade adapter. There is also a recess for a set screw on the shaft. Ther is no timing mark on the crankshaft gear, but the camshaft gear has a mark adjoining a hobbing hole on the gear.
Can you help me with this problem.

Answer
The crankshaft gear will have timing mark to match the mark on the camshaft gear.  It may be hidden or obscured by scorched oil on the gear, which you will have to clean off with carb cleaner.  You will need to locate this mark and line it up with the camshaft.  Hope this helps.
