Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower stopped, loud pop, riding mower

Ok i have a riding mower murray42 inch cut 2 blade.. i was mowing and felt a rattle and then a loud pop sounded like it was coming from the blades or close to the engine...i tried to recrank and nothing... then waited and tried to crank and then pop.. i checked the oil it was on the tip of the stick...my husband come home and after yelling a bit..this was the first time it had been crank since last summer.. he said it needed oil and it still will not crank ..help me please

Well first of all having low oil is not good for a engine.Running the engine with a little oil would not make it pop the first time.Seems like this engine has not been maintained like it should have been.The oil needs to be checked every time you out gas in it. This engine has been running low on oil for a while and it finally broke due to overheating problems on the crank.I would suggest getting a second opinion from a small engine dealer.
