Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&G 5H.P. Problem, briggs and stratton, decent shape

Question
I have an old 5 H.P. Briggs and Stratton motor. The serial number is 130202 and model is 0209. The motor will only start when it is fully choked, when we turn off the choke the engine quits. We bought a carb rebuild kit and installed it. We cleaned all the old parts thouroughly. The problem is obviously fuel flow but we cant find a way to get the engine to run consistantly on low throttle. The engine is very old but i think the cylinders are in decent shape.

Answer
Hi Dom,

I think you are on the right track.  I sounds like a fuel flow problem to me also.  Re-clean the carb and make sure each and every small opening is clear.  Use a small wire to probe with.  I have had to re-do a carb several times until I found one last hole that I missed.  Check the flow from the tank also.

Good Luck,
Michael
