Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower, briggs stratton, craftmans

Question
I have a Craftmans riding mower, with a Briggs & Stratton 15.5 HP engine. It has been in storage for 3 years. I finally got it to start by cleaning the Carb, the problem is it only starts when the throttle handle is on choke, as soon as I try to move the throttle handle to run, it dies. Also when I release the clutch it dies. When it's running with the throttle handle on choke it doesn't sound real good. Any advice?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Try to keep it running, by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it runs without the choke on, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.
When you release the clutch, the engine needs added power which it can't get with the fuel flow problem.

Let me know how you make out.
