Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Battery drain...., electric clutch, charging system

Question
hello...

I have a John deere riding mower 160. My blades are draining my battery! When the blades are engaged, it is draining the battery and if I disconnect the battery, the blades stop. Is this a problem with a short or with PTO?

Thanks
David

Answer
If this is an electric clutch (which it sounds like it is), it should draw from the battery while engaged.  You need to verify the charging system is working properly to offset this discharge condition and keep the battery charged.  With all of the electrical accessories on, the charging system should still be producing enough output amperage to run the accessories and charge the battery.  Hope this helps.
