we have John Deere 400 riding lawn mower and the belt keeps coming off the pully for no apparant reason.  can you tell us what to do?

Eric, it is the mower deck drive belt.

Answer
Check all the mower deck pulleys and the idler pulley. The iler pulley on the mower deck may be the problem.  I recall the mounting hole for the idler pulley bolt wears over time, causing misalignment which makes the belt come off.  Check all the pulleys for any side-to-side and up-and-down play.

The idler pulley is the pulley that is spring loaded; that is a spring is connected to the idler pulley arm.
