I cannot get my Snapper(15 years old) to go into reverse.  Sometimes, rarely, I can't into any gear.

Suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,

This depends on the model of Snapper you have.  Please let me know the model number and, at least, whether it is a front engine or rear engine rider.

Thanks for the reply.  I do not know the model number, but it is a rear engine 8HP Briggs & Stratton.

Thanks

Answer
There is likely one of two problems.  The first could be related to the shift mechanism itself.  If it is out of adjustment, the linkage may not be able to push the friction disc to the opposite side of the driving wheel.  Another issue could be the shaft the friction disc slides on (to allow it to position at various spots on the driving wheel) may be contaminated in the spot where it needs to go to reverse and you end up deflecting the shift linkage trying to get it to reverse.  You will need to position the mower up on it's end stands and have someone move the shifter (with the spark plug lead removed and the clutch pedal depressed) to see if it the rubber friction disc has full movement.  Hope this helps.
