Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): No spark on Kohler 16hp engine, engine cranks, kohler engines

Question
I have a Jacobsen Homelite tractor with a Kohler 16hp engine Spec# 71147 / Model# K341AQS. The engine cranks over fine but I have no spark. There is a module mounted behind the coil on the shroud, could this be bad or some other electrical problem (ie. coil, wiring, etc.)?

Answer
I don't have all of the literature for Kohler engines, but I can point you in the right direction.  If this engine has points and condensor, 12V ignition system, you need to start by making sure you have 12V being fed to the coil.  If you have 12V at the coil, it's likely the points and condensor need to be replaced.  If this is an electronic magneto ignition, you need to remove all of the shut-off leads that attach the key and safety switches to the motor and test for spark again.  If you now have spark, there is a defective / misadjusted safety switch or a problem with the key switch.  If you still have no spark, the ignition module is likely the problem.  I believe the module you are referring to is actually the voltage regulator and is  not associated with the ignition system.  Hope this helps.
