Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Riding Mower, craftsman riding mower, transaxel

Question
Michael,

I have a Craftsman 42" riding mower with two blades. Model: 917.256562 Purchased new 1995. It has a 6 speed transmission. The gear shift has recently become very hard to shift from gear to gear. It is not making a noise. I just noticed what appears to be fluid residue close to the transaxel. Does this type of transaxel need to be serviced by changing or adding fluid ?
If so, can you explain.

Thanks for your time and expertise.

Answer
Hi Guy,

I am not familiar with the exact configuration or needs of your transaxle model.  I do know that they need fluid and a that certain level is required.  I would start there, by checking the level and adding fluid if needed.  If it ran dry, there could be some damage done.  Being 10 years old it wouldn't hurt to change the fluid if it is low and you plan to keep it for a while longer.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
