Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere S82 electrical problem?, jumper cables, booster cables

Question
I have a John Deere S82 that will not turn the starter. I have check battery, charged it and have good ground. I can use jumper cables from the battery directly to starter and it will turn and start. However, nothing happens when using the starter switch. The solenoid will click but nothing else.

Answer
If you connect the booster cables directly to the battery and it starts OK, the problem is with the tractor's battery.  You can have the battery load tested by a shop after it is fully charged.  If the solenoid is clicking with the booster battery hooked up at the tractor's battery but the starter doesn't turn the engine over, the problem is with a connection.  This could mean the connection made inside the solenoid as well but it's either the solenoid or the connection from the solenoid to the starter.  Hope this helps.
