Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh on Craftsman mower wont start, float valve, two speeds

Question
Craftsman mower with the rubber priming bulb on the side. Has two speeds, slow and fast, set by handle near carburetor.

The engine would not run, found that the circular float had gas in it. Replaced the float. It started and ran fine—for one day. Next time I wanted to use it, same problem—no start. The bottom of the fuel bowl was wet with fuel.

Checked the float, it seems OK.

I have no manual. Should I check the float setting? If so, what should it be?

I will appreciate any guidance you can offer.

Answer
Hi Kent,

The top of the float should be parallel to the top of the carb body.  (Parallel but not flush.) If the setting is okay but fuel is leaking and flooding, then the float valve or seat may be worn and leaking.  If the spark plug is dry, the float valve may be sticking closed or there could be another problem in the carb which is not float related.  You will need to determine if the engine is having problems because of flooding or not enough fuel.  How does the spark plug look, wet or dry?  If dry, try to start it by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  Does the primer squirt fuel into the carb?

Let me know how you make out.
