My MTD Yard Machine garden tractor (1998?) with a twin cylinder Briggs motor (20 HP Diamond I/C model # 460777) is surging. I have done a very basic tune up, oil, gas filter, cleaned & adjusted all linkages, air filter. It does not idle or run at full song without surging. Im stuck for the next step. It is a new tractor to me so Im not sure of the history.

can you help?

John, try to richen up the low speed mixture a bit (small screw at the base of the carb) if this does not do it ,,,,you may have an air leak.....Check all gaskets on the manifold and where carb assembles to the manifold...if ok, then it can be your gov. Goverened Idle spring adjustment,,,,(Manual Time)  Let me know,,,,,Bob

Bob, thanks very much for getting back to me....

I will try those things but before I do I want to check a couple of proceedures with you....To richen; turn it in, or turn it out (my guess;in)
Is the gasket check a visual one, or do you have any tricks I should try...The Gov idle spring was screwed in all the way when I first looked at it. That seemed odd, but I think I may screw it all the way back in again as backing it out somewhat seemed to make the problem a little worse. Im hoping for a leak at the intake manifold/head. there was a bunch of debris I cleaned off those areas and, in combination with other cleaning I did,  the problem did not go away.

Ill throw in the ignorant apology here. Im not as savy as I like to think I am about this stuff.....So I apologize for this running on...

(manual time) means what?...can you adjust the timing manually on this motor?

and finally, lastly, can you adjust the governor....

thanks again, it is very much appreciated (You see, I have to justify the purchase of this tractor with the boss...)

Answer
John, The adjustment screw is turned counter clockwise (out) to richen the mixture. The gasket check and loose screws that hold the manifold are visual and done with a wrench. "manual time" if you feel mechanicly inclined I suggest that you get a "briggs" manual eather at the library ofr buy one from a dealer. The governor can be adjusted ....Good luck to you, let me know what happens....Bob
