Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Atlas Push Mower, blown engines, k mart

Question
Dear Michael,
I have an Atlas push mower about ten years old and the splash guard or rock guard has deteriorated away.  I removed it and it was not easy with the rivets.
Now it is like a machine gun firing rocks and twigs at your legs.
My son refuses to mow and I need a replacement.
Where do I begin to search?
I've checked local stores, Sears, Lowes, K-mart and can you beleive they don't carry any for any mower.  Where does safety come in?
My model number is AL300-J with series 204J.
Thanks for your help,
Stacy

Answer
Hi Stacy,

I would go to a repair shop and buy one from an old scrapped mower.  Most shops have mowers with blown engines that the owner doesn't want to fix and the mowers are then scrapped.  They should sell you either the flap or the whole mower for $10.

Or call: http://www.outdoordistributors.com/parts.html

Or make one from a piece of metal or rubber and hinges.

let me know how you make out.

Good Luck,
Michael
