Steering Column Repair: Car stolen and steering column busted, wheel mechanism, cop shop

Question
I have a 92 buick century that was stolen and they broke the left side of the steering column by the turn signal. Now my car is at the cop shop and I can't start it with the key. I wanna avoid another towing fee... Everyone tells me they used a screwdriver to start it... I wanna try doing that but I have no clue where to put the screwdriver or how to use it. I was hoping you could give me a clue so I can avoid another 150 dollar tow. Thanks

Answer

broken gm column
Hi Joshua:

In order to start the car, the rod on the left side of the column that is now exposed needs to be pulled towards the driver.  You will feel it connect with each position of the ignition switch until you hit the start position, then it will have a spring action, just like the key does when you start it.  Once it starts, simply release the rod and let it return to the run position.  The only thing you need to know is there is a locking pin in the steering wheel mechanism that can in fact lock the steering while you are driving.  When they break the column, most often this lock is disabled, but there is still a chance it can jump back into position and put you at risk.

Good luck
