Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 6 hp Evinrude Fisherman, six horse, gas filter

Question
The motor when put away for the winter was fine.
I checked and cleaned spark plugs when brought out of storage. Gas was stored with a presevative.  When the motor starts it runs fine
with the choke pulled out. WHen you put the choke in it stalls.  Like it is choking for air. This one is beyond me. I have checked the gas filter,
and the plugs again. I have no clue what to do next. Can you help? Not sure the year but I would say late 70's

Answer
LAURA, YOUR SIX HORSE IS SUFFERING FROM A DIRTY CARB.  I PROMISE YOU THAT IS THE PROBLEM AND I PROMISE YOU THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP IS FULL OF MOTORS WITH THE SAME AILMENT.  WHEN I HAD MY SHOP I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS TIME OF YEAR COME.

YOUR CARB IS GUMMED UP AND WILL NEED TO BE REBUILT TO PROPERLY CORECT THE PROBLEM.  SOMETIMES ADDING SOME CARB CLEANER TO FRESH GAS AND RUNNING IT WITH THE CHOKE PULLED OUT FOR AWHILE WILL WORK BUT NOT ALWAYS.

GOOD LUCK LAURA,
GEORGE
