Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Riding Lawnmower, diagnostic test, solenoid

Question
I have an older model Murray lawnmower given to me by a friend.  It wouldn't start so I read your tip about starting my mower by jumping the solenoid.  That worked great and I was able to mow most of my acre lot. But when I tried to start it again and I did not realize that it was in gear when I tried to start it.  Now when I try the solnoid is locked up and won't turn.  Did I break something? If so, how do I fix it?

Answer
I don't recommend you continue starting the mower this way but it is useful as a diagnostic test and then correct the problem.  I don't understand what you mean by the solenoid being locked up so I assume you mean the starter engages but doesn't turn the engine over.  It's possible you damaged the bendix drive (or the starter) on the starter because the starter was under so much load.  Check to see if the starter gear is already engaged with the flywheel ring gear as the engine sits static.  If it is, you can order a bendix kit for the starter.  If it isn't, it's possible the starter itself is the problem and will need to be replaced.  Hope this helps.
