Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Coils on small engines, battery ignition, electrical shop

Question
I have trouble determining if coils are good when doing routine maintenance/repair on roto-tillers and small lawnmowers. Is there a way that a homeowner can perform a test to determine if the coil is working properly? It is hard to find an electrical shop that is willing to test or has the equipment to perform a test. Thanks for your prompt reply.

Answer
Hello,

Sorry, I don't know how to test them with a meter.  Usually if they don't produce spark when they are properly grounded and the flywheel gap is correct or in the case of battery ignition, power is getting to the coil, then the coil is bad.

Best,
Michael
