Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Trimmer filter line dissolved, cycle engine oil, filter line

Question
I have a Tanaka TBC-160 trimmer that wasn't delivering gas. When I looked inside the fuel tank I realized the rubber fuel line connected to the filter had completely dissolved and shut off the gas delivery.

How did this happen? I use premium 91 octane gas with Motomaster 2 cycle engine oil  at a 16:1 ratio. During the winter I sometimes leave the trimmer with gas inside it.

Am I using the right gas or did the storage cause the problem? Can I run the trimmer without replacing the gas filter?

Thanks,
Henry

Answer
Old fuel will degrade things like fuel lines and that stresses the importance of completely draining the system when not in use for extended periods.  The oil in a two-stroke mix also accelerates the problem as it speeds up the fuel's degradation.  If the oil you are using recommends a 16:1 ratio, I'd swiitch to something better.  Good oils are generally mixed at 40:1 or 50:1...make sure you follow the oil manufacturer's recommendations because the equipment manufacturer assumes the worst oil may be used when they recommend a mix ratio.

Do not run the trimmer without the filter.  You need the weight of the filter to keep the line submersed in fuel in all positions and the debris you may allow into the carb will cause you more repairs down the road.  Hope this helps.
