Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 14.5 HP Riding Lawn Mower, mtd lawn tractor, fuel additive

Question
I just "inherited" an MTD lawn tractor with a 14.5 HP B&S engine. I had it running, but it would die when put into gear. I tried some carb cleaner fuel treatment and that killed it all together. I drained the Fuel from the tank and replaced the fuel filter. Replaced the air filter and battery (was requiring jump start) and it will start and run briefly if a small amount of fuel is poured into the top side of the carb. I suspect I over did it with the fuel additive. What can I do to make it come back to life?

Answer
Hi Rob,

First, try adjusting the carb mixture screws.
If it only runs when you add fuel to the carb then I would suspect a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  This is usually caused by dirt, debris, water or gummed fuel inside the carb.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
