Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): toro riding mower with broken shifter, drive pin, riding mower

Question
I have an old Toro riding mower, model 56027 that has a tecumseh motor and a 3-speed-plus-reverse Foote transmission.  I think it's from about 1974. Tonight the shift lever broke off inside the machine.  It broke right at the point in the middle of the ball where there is a round cross piece that goes through the shaft.
I think I can get the shift from Toro, but I don't know how much is involved in replacing it.  Is this just something that I can take out the old piece and slap the new one in, or is there soem technical work involved that will be beyond my limited abilities?
Thanks for any information or help you can provide.

Answer
Hi Bern,

If the cross pin is removed,  the lever should separate from the ball.  Give it a try with a drive pin and hammer but support the ball so that the shifter doesn't damage any gears.  If the pin is frozen and can't be removed in place you might have to remove the ball and use a press or vise.  Removing the ball might either involve removing a simple cover or major disassembly of the transmission.

Let me know how you make out,
Michael
