Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): transaxle noise, craftsman lawn tractor, transmission model

Question
My husband just purchased a Craftsman Lawn Tractor 21.0 HP, 42" Mower Electric Start Automatic Transmission Model No. 917.273521.
Have not used it, started up did transmisssion purge and tried out mower. Has loud grinding noise coming from transaxle area, called repair, they sent man out said sounds like no oil in transaxle , will replace transaxle. We said no, get me new tractor. Delivered new tractor today same sound but not as loud. Called repair again, man told me to use it for a few weeks sound should go away. This is my first automatic Lawn Tractor. Do you have any sugestions for me, is this suppose to sound like this? I asked this question on the tractor forum and most answers were the Hydro transaxle has a whine but this sound is a grinding and it was on both tractors.

Answer
Marie. Some noise is expected from a transaxel area. The gear mesh is not as precise as an automobile's. The kay is does the noise or sound get louder at it is being used. I have a friend who works for sears,,,all he does is tractor repair, I will getr the streight answer from him,,,,,,Bob
