Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower - Hard to Start & Keep Started, dull blade, eager 1

Question
Sears Eager 1 with 5.0 HP engine approx 3-5 years old.

Last season began having problems starting mower. Was taking several pulls (instead of just one as it used to), would idle for a while and then die.  Usually would go okay after second or third round of hard to start, idle and die.  I replace spark plug with proper Sears plug, did not notice much difference.

This year much worse.  Have to pull multiple times and idles and dies multiple times (multiple being 4,5,6 times).  I cleaned area near the rubber push button for priming.  There was a bolt/screw with a spring around it that and the spring was completely enclosed with dirt and oil.  Cleaned this.

Also next to this cleanded a little platform with a wahser that had a small thin spring on top that is hooked up to some sort of linkage. The spring has a hook on the bottom part that is on the washer that keeps it from rotating complete around the platform.

Below the push primer cleaned a recessed area that had what appeared to be a slightly recessed bolt head but is a plactic cap of some sort about 1/4" diameter. Cap rotates freely but was afraid to take it off but did clean this area too.

Net result was starting was easier, one or two pulls but still teneded to idle a while then die.  Once it appears that it is going to continue to run, it dies when I get into just moderate heavy, but not excessively heavy, grass.  Used to be egine would reve up in heavy grass, now it dies.

As indicated this has been a progessively worsening problem, not one that just popped up.

Thank you,
David

Answer
David, have you changed the air cleaner? Use FRESH  gas? Changed the oil (at All?) Sharpened the blade (dull blade will kill an engine) New spark plug???   Clean the grass from the under deck? Remove the plug wire first!!!!!!

Any way This sounds like a Techumse engine. If you have done ALL of the above ....Major work may be in store....Let me know ,,,,Bob
