Question

Michael

I got the rope and new handle.
I would like to try and change the rope myself.
I took the recoil housing off. But I can figure how to make it work.

So please send me the details.

Thanks again.

Bobby

The rope broke and I am trying to replace it. I bought a BS starter repair kit (part no 5054).
It is not for my engine. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Bobby,

You can buy rope by the foot from any repair shop. Bring the old rope to match up the diameter.  You can also remove the entire recoil housing from the engine (4 bolts) and bring it there for them to replace the rope.  Let me know if you want to replace it yourself and I will send detailed info.

Answer
Hi Bobby,

Pre-wind the recoil reel by hand [about 6 turns, to set the spring tension] and clamp it with Vise-Grip pliers.  Remove the old rope.  Thread the new rope through the shroud housing eyelet and to the reel hub.  Let the reel re-wind itself until it is full.   If there is not enough spring tension you can wind it a couple of turns more by slipping the rope around between the reel and shroud.  Re-clamp the reel.  Cut the rope to length and thread it though the handle.  At all knots, burn and melt the rope with a lighter to prevent untying.  Re-assemble the housing to the engine.

Let me know if you run into trouble or if it works out for you.

Michael
