Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Greasing my garden tractor, grease gun, grease fittings

Question
I have a Troy-Bilt tractor and I have done basic tune-ups and would like to do more.  I want to try to the grease work.

I bought a small grease gun but don't know how to use it.  There are grease fittings on the axle and I'm not sure how to open them to get the grease in.

Can you help?

Thanks,
Craig Williams

Answer
Hi Craig,

Sorry for my delay.  My ISP was down.

The grease fittings are like one way valves. They allow grease in but not back out.  You push the grease gun's fitting over the equipment's grease fitting and operate the grease gun.  Depending on what the fitting supplies and how dry the area needing grease is, you usually add 1 to 3 pumps of grease.  Sometimes you can see the old grease coming out at the other end, so you will know that the area is greased.

Good Luck,
Michael
