Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn mower stalls, briggs stratton, internal passages

Question
Hello,

I am having problems with my lawn mower, a Murray/Yard Machines front wheel propelled model with a 4HP Briggs & Stratton. The mower will run for a few seconds after squirting gas into the carb via the primer bulb, but it will not run after it burns that fuel. I have removed the air cleaner and tried it without the gas cap on and with no change. The gas is fresh. I guess this is a problem with getting fuel to the engine, but I see anything obvious that would prevent that from happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
If it will only run on a squirt of fuel, the carb is dirty inside.  You will need to clean the carb thoroughly, including pushing a piece of tag wire through all of the internal passages and follow up with carb cleaner.  You should also replace or clean the fuel filter.  Hope this helps.
