Auto body repair & detailing: Adhesive for use on car bumpers, sided foam tape, auto bumpers
Frame-2
QUESTION: Hello Dave,   I want to be able to attach plastic LED signs to auto bumpers.  Please find a sample sign attached.

I can't use suction cups because the sign will get stolen, and I can't use screws because people won't want to screw anything onto their bumper.  Is there an adhesive that will allow the sign to be attached but not easily removed?  And when it is removed it won't damage the paint? I can put 'pads' on the rear of the sign so it doesn't need to be glued directly.

 Thank you,

Michael

ANSWER: Hi Michael!....Thanks for the picture....This helps out....As far as attatching a sign like this, especially if damaging the paint after removal is concerned, I would recommend using an adheisive 2 sided foam tape....A company called " Pro Form " which I have dealt with for many years, has an excellent product....Their website is " proformproducts.com "....First of all, the tape comes in various sizes....1/4, 1/2, 5/8, and 7/8 inch widths....And in rolls of either 15 or 60 Feet long....Part numbers are PF 949 through PF 956....You will also need to purchase their " Molding Tape Adhesion Promoter "....Part number for this, is PF 946C....Once picked up, simply apply the adhesion promotor to the backside of the sign, as long as it has been thouroughly cleaned with a wax and grease remover, allow it to flash off, then install the tape as required....Next step, is to wipe down the area that the sign is to be installed on with wax and grease remover as well, and simply press it on....After removing the sign, I would then recommend what we call here a " Carmel Eraser Wheel "....This can be picked up at any local Autobody Supply store....( Sorry, but I don't have the part number for this )....It can be attatched to any drill, air or electric, with the propper arbor....It will remove the tape residue completely, WITHOUT damaging the paint....Just remember to keep the speed slow...If you have any more questions, drop me a line anytime....Thanks....Dave

QUESTION: Hi Dave - I forgot to ask you.  Would Pro Form's adhesive tape be strong enough so people couldn't just come by and pull the frame from the bumper?  Or would it form a bond kinda like Krazy Glue so it's really tight?  _That's_ what I'm looking for!

Michael

Answer
Hi Again Michael!....Most definitly....This tape will provide secure adhesion, and will NOT be easily removed by hand....The best method for removal of the sign, is to use 2 vise grips with what we call " Piano Wire " attatched between them....This can be picked up any local auto glass shop....This is a serated wire, generally used when cutting out windshields....Simply " Saw " back and forth, using an upward pressure, as not to damage the painted surface....Once the sign has been removed, simply use the carmel eraser wheel as I mentioned before....Just as a note, 3M makes an excellent tape as well, but dollar for dollar, Pro Form will provide the exact same result....Thanks again....Dave
