Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Homelite string trimmer starts then stops, homelite string trimmer, vent hose

Question
My trimmer starts on full choke but once I take off the choke it stalls. It will start again on full choke a stay at low idle but stalls when I try to take the choke off and accelerate. Also the accelerator cable doesn't spring back once I let go, it stays open. Could you please help me.One last question please. I replaced the fuel lines that go into the fuel tank. Do they both need to be long enough to hit the bottom of the tank?

Answer
You may need to remove and clean the carb and replace the diaphrams.  Before you do, try adjusting the carb as described below:

The starting point I like to use for the mixture screws is 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated (low & high speed). The low speed is closest to the cylinder and the high speed is right beside it. The idle adjustment screw is not in the same proximity of the mixture screws. I like to set the high speed first. Hold the throttle wide open and begin turning the high speed screw in until the engine revs as high as it will go (this is too lean and don't do it for too long), then back it out 1/4 of turn (mixture will be sufficiently rich to provide power at high RPM). With the engine idling (you may have to adjust the idle screw slightly so it will idle somewhat normally), open the throttle rapidly. There should be no hesitation. Turn the low speed mixture in 1/8 of a turn and open the throttle rapidly. If there is still no hesitation, turn the low speed in another 1/8 of a turn. Keep doing this until you find that it hesitates, then back it out 1/4 of a turn. This will be sufficiently rich to provide power off-idle. Then you can fine tune your idle. The line with the fuel filter needs to be a little longer than just reaching the bottom of the tank (about 1" extra) and the length of the other line should usually be just 1/8" from the bottom (if it's for the primer).  If it's a vent hose, it just needs to stick in the tank about 1".  Depends on your model of trimmer.  You will have to determine whether the throttle cable is the culprit or the carb that is causing it to stick.  Hope this helps.
