Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): murray riding lawnmower, jumper wire, key switch

Question
I have a 17 hp murray riding lawnmower about 7-8 years old. The only trouble I've had is a new fuel filter last year. This year I put a brand new battery in it. It does not even crank over.  There is no sound at all.  What could be the problem? It is a Briggs and Straton engine. Any help would be much appreciated. Susan

Answer
If you have no sound at all (not even solenoid click), you may have a problem with a safety switch (neutral safety or clutch switch) or the key switch.  For following test, I am assuming the battery is fully charged and in good condition.  If you can use a jumper wire from the battery terminal on the solenoid to the smaller terminal (that comes from the key to energize the solenoid) and get the engine to turn over, you have a problem either with a safety switch or the key switch.  If the battery is completely dead, you should charge it fully and take it to a shop for a load test.  If the battery passes the load test, re-install it and check that your connections (at battery, solenoid and starter are clean and tight).  Hope this helps.
