I have a craftsman 5hp eger 1 lawn mower that I got from a friend. It was not running at all when I got it. I have an old eger1 mower that I have been using for parts as the engines seem to be the same. I have finally managed to get it to run but the problem is it is very , very hard to get started. Once started it runs great! but if you turn it off then it is again very very hard to start. The old mower that I am using for parts ran great, started first pull every time and it is 20 yr old craftsman eger 1. This one is much newer maybe 8 or 9 yrs old (model # 917 372480) engine model # 143. 424152. I have put the float and needle from my old one on the newer one as well as the spark plug and coil ( not sure that is what its called on a lawnmower} LOL. Anyway what am I missing that would keep it from starting easy?  Thanks in advance for your help   John

Check the head bolts, torque to 200 inch pounds.  Make sure the intake gaskets are soft, not brittle, and sealing good.

Do you have a primer bulb on the carbuetor?

Answer
Are those coils the same?  Some of the earlier coils used a differnt flywheel key, this could mess up the ignition timeing.
Unfortunatley strange problems arise when you start swapping problems, I have experienced this on a couple of occassions.  It justs takes time and patientce.  One trimmer took me 4 months to fix...turned out someone installed the incorrect, too small, insulator gasket on the carburetor.

Have you ever removed a flywheel?
This how you can check the keys...they should be the same color.  Older keys were grey newer ones are gold.

Let me know.
