Snowmobile Repair: ignition, tillotson carb, point gap

Question
What is the points setting for this particular model?  The points power source runn of the same side of the magneito so I am not sure it would all be bad, but if the condensor is bad would that keep the points from sparking?

I have a 73 bombdier with ROTAX tnt440 Type435 that only has spark on one coil. have checked everything back to condensor no spark, if the condensor is bad then I wouldn't get spark. How do I check source of problem have checked points.  question, it has a tillotson carb. HD 109 and need info on setting high and low RPM's.

Hello Tom,

I believe you need to replace the internal ignition coil. You can probably get a new coil at www.alssnowmo.com or http://www.royaldistributing.com/, but other than that they are hard to find. As far as the RPM's, to get the sled running right, you will need to turn the high speed (bigger screw that is farther from the engine), and low speed screw (smaller screw closer to the engine) in or out until it runs well. The initial settings for the screws are 3/4 to 1 turn out from the closed position. Once you have the carb adjusted, there is another screw on the other side of the carb that can be turned in or out to raise the idle speed. I hope I have helped you. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will be glad to help! Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman

Answer
Hello Tom,

The point gap is measured at 0.014 to 0.018 in. The timing is measured as 0.110-0.130 BTDC measured at advance. As far the no spark problem, it can get tricky trying to narrow the problem down, but I know you don't want to install 20 parts, only to find out the last part you install is the defective one. As for the condenser, during proper operation, there should not be sparks coming from it. The condenser's purpose is to eliminate sparking at the points so that they will not become eroded from sparks. If the condenser is either working well or not at all, you will not se sparks from it. If it is failing, you will see sparks coming from it. You may be able to find some electrical parts for the sled at www.denniskirk.com or www.ebay.com   .   I hope this helps you. I know electrical problems are frustrating. Your best bet would be to install new points, condensers, and the internal coils. You may also want to replace the external coil(s) as they are less that $20.00 from www.denniskirk.com . The points and condensers would be a good place to start though. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will be glad to help! Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
