Snowmobile Repair: engine, kotzebue alaska, oversized pistons

Question
I am rebuilding my 1997 Arctic Cat Bearcat 440 engine.  My readings of the cylinders gives me about 12 to 15 thousandths clearance between the new pistons and the honed cylinders. I am concerned that there is too much room in there to get a quiet sounding engine when it is put back together.  Seeing that it is virtually impossible to get any information these days, even in the manuals from Arctic and others, I need to get it right.  I have rebuilt quite a few, but moltly minor wear inside the jugs, those came out ok, but they miked out much less than this one.  I want to know if I should send it out for sleves and oversized pistons, or take a chance on it being ok as it is.  Can you help me out here with some solid information on what the correct clearance is supposed to be for this engine?  I apperciate any advice that you can give.. thanks
Sincerely, Rob

Hello Rob,

To be honest, it is very hard to come across that information. I understand your concern with the clearance. What you will need to do to get accurate information is go to this page, http://www.arcticcatdealers.com/ , and find your local dealer. From there, you can email or call them to get the specifications. I am sorry I couldn't help you directly. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will be glad to help you. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
