Snowmobile Repair: Leaking antifreeze polaris 440 1992, head gasket, resevoir

Question
My polaris is using up antifreeze. I don't smell anything and there is never a visable sign of leakage anywhere. I fill up the resevoir with antifreeze and go out for a 20 minute ride, when I get back it is completely empty and I have to fill it again for the next short ride. Other than that the sled runs great. Any ideas?

Answer
Hello Robb,

Sorry for the long delay in my response. The coolant is going somewhere, because no sled can use it that fast without placing it somewhere. I would suspect either the heat exchangers under the sled, or the hose that connects them in the very rear. Here is my recommendation. First, get the sled into a garage. Then, start it, and let it run for 10-15 minutes. The engine will get a little warm, but it won't hurt it. Keep the track elevated. At some point you will most probably see coolant running down off of the sled and be able to track it down. If not, then coolant is entering the engine. In this case you would need to check the head gasket and water pump seals. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
