Snowmobile Repair: no spark, killswitch, prowler

Question
I have a 1991 prowler/440,I was riding along just fine and then it just killed, ran some tests and found no spark,I checked all wires they are good, disconnected the tether switch still nothing, checked the killswitch it's good, what would be your next step? it is an older sled so I don't want to spend to much on repairs.any thoughts you have on this would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Curt,

I would suspect the coil, with it just dying like that. Especially on a early 90's Cat. There's pretty much only two things left that can cause this, the coil or CDI. Neither part is very expensive, considering the prices of most this year. You can get them at www.denniskirk.com . The Coil probably will run about 30 and the CDI about 60. If you don't want to spend money without knowing the problem for sure, you could always remove the coil and take it to your dealers or small engine repair shop for testing. Most will do it for little or nothing. You should be good to go, with at least a new coil. Hope this helps. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
