Snowmobile Repair: Charging system, honda odyssey atv, honda odyssey

Question
Hello,
I have acouple of questions. I recently purchased an old Honda Odyssey ATV and the engine was changed at one point to a CCW 400.
I have picked up a new points plate with a lighting coil and it has electric start. Reading your other answers am I to presume that the lighting coil puts out AC not DC voltage? and am to put a rectifier in if this is the case?. I am also looking for information with regards to installing a voltage regulator to charge the battery but all the old wiring diagrams I have found online don't make sense to me, where the regulator is installed, they show it at the end of the circuit and not before the battery.
I am capable of drawing the correct diagram if I could get you to tell me where to wire in the regulator and rectifier. I would presume that I am to take the two yellow wires from the lighting coil into the rectifier, then to the regulator and then out to all the switches. is this correct?
One last thing, what do I use to shut this engine off, I was told that the ground wire that is wired to the points plate is the kill switch, is this true?, I was thinking that I could just cut the power to the coils to act as a kill switch, would this work?
As I mentioned earlier, I am not looking for a wiring diagram, just a description so I can hook up the head lights and a charging system then be able to shut down the engine, if you could help me do this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Hello Duncan,

I've never worked on an ATV, but here are a few tips. I believe the voltge comming from the coil would be DC. I'm sorry I can't really help with the wiring, but here is how I would turn it off. I would try using a kill switch like this: http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/31-2946.html , wired into supply wire on the coil. Not, the main, plug wire. Mfg supply does have rectifiers ect. I'm sorry I can't help you out. Your best bet would be Mike, another Allexpert that helps with ATV's : http://www.allexperts.com/displayExpert.asp?Expert=107  .  Hope you are able to get it wired properly. Good luck! --Arcticatman
