Snowmobile Repair: cheetah only runs on one cylinder, champion powersport, fuel mixture

Question
The last I used my '91 cheetah touring (440 liquid engine), I drove it into the shed, jacked up the rear end to clear out the tunnel.  As soon as I gave it a touch of gas, the engine bogged.  As it was end of season, I didn't get around to looking at it for some time.  When I started it, I could only make it run on the right hand cylinder.  Obviously this is why it was bogging down even with no load on the engine.  It appears to be getting spark, and fuel alright.  I tried cleaning out the carb, etc anyways, as well as a new spark plug.  All I can think of now is maybe the coil.  Would this seem like a likely cause?  Or am I missing something else really obvious?
If it is likely the coil, is there any way I can test it myself, or do I just have to buy a new one and hope (they are pretty pricey).

Answer
Hello Andrew,

Alot of sleds have this problem, running on one cylinder, and bogging. It is an indirect result of the spark plug not firing when it is in use. The causes vary, from too rich of a fuel mixture, to bad plugs or the coil. Here are my suggestions. I don't recommend using NGK plugs. Try plugs like Champion Powersport or Autolite. Make sure your gas isn't old. Here is a link for a very good deal on a coil for your sled http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/01-089-8.html  .   To get the coil tested, you would need to remove it and take it to your dealer for testing. You may be better off just buying the coil. Also, use good quality oil. Using oil like TCW 3 NMMA type oil, is not a wise idea. The best oils you could use are Amsoil, Klotz, Maxima Tundra oil, or Blue Marble. Oils that are semi-synthetic or synthetic will keep the plugs from fouling. Hope this helps you out. Let me know if I can help with any other questions. Good luck with the Cat! --Arcticatman
