Snowmobile Repair: Engines that fit a 1988 El Tigre 6000, connecting rod bearings, fuel pumps

Question
I have a 1988 elTigre 6000 snowmobile that came with a 530cc engine that has failed. What engines will fit this sled with little to no modifications. Do you have this info and any mods that would need to be done such as keeping carbs and clutch etc.

Answer
Hello Aj,

Trying to install an engine of a different cc or type can quickly become a very irritating job, as the electrical may be hard to hook up or not match, the oil injection cables may be different, or the new engine may require 2 fuel pumps instead of 1, ect. With that said, here is a list of engines that will fit the sled identically. The Cheetah's L/C engine will fit good with no mods, the 1988-1986 El Tigre engines will of course all the same, and the 1992-1989 El Tigre EXT engine will fit exactly, too. You might want to consider a rebuild, it can be pretty reasonably cheap, and a good performance boost. You can go to www.denniskirk.com for most parts for the sled for a rebuild. Just be sure to get all new gaskets, bearings, connecting rod bearings, pistons, rings, and to check to make sure your cylinders don't need to be re-sleeved. Ebay is a good place to look for a used motor, as well as www.alssnowmo.com  .  Good luck with the sled, let me know if I can help answer any other questions at all. Good luck with the Cat! --Arcticatman
